[Elliott] Abrams was the key man in Reagan administration policy toward Central America, when that administration was abetting what a court recently ruled was a genocide in Guatemala, when the U.S. was backing the army of El Salvador in a series of death squad assassinations and massacres, and when the U.S. was invading Nicaragua with a Contra force that went after what one U.S. general described as ‘soft targets,’ meaning civilians, things like cooperatives.

Abrams later came back during the George W. Bush administration, joined the National Security Council and was a key man in implementing the U.S. policy of backing Israeli attacks against Gaza, when the U.S. refused to accept the results of the Gaza elections, where Hamas defeated Fatah in a vote, and instead Abrams and company backed a war operation to overturn the results of the election, backing the forces of Mohammed Dahlan.

Some commentators have said, 'Well, Abrams is not a Trump guy. He represents traditional, established U.S. foreign policy.’ And that’s true. The problem is that that U.S. policy has been to abet genocide when the U.S. feels it’s necessary.

Journalist Allan Nairn, speaking to Democracy Now! about right-wing hawk Elliott Abrams, who is now the Trump administration’s special envoy to Venezuela as the U.S. government attempts to oust elected Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro. Watch the full interview here.

I think it becomes very clear what we have to do: protect the refugees. Protect them. Don’t leave them on the bridge to go into heat stroke. Don’t leave them to miscarry a child after you’ve been gang-raped. I mean, what are we thinking that we would declare war and bring down total abuse on people that have just run for their lives?
Jennifer Harbury, who has practiced law near the U.S.-Mexico border for 40 years, and who fought to expose the U.S. role in the torture and murder of her husband in Guatemala in 1992. Full interview here.

One word of advice to all the protesters there: Do not believe that your cellphones or your computers are clean and uncompromised. I guarantee you that they’re using the entire suite of surveillance devices. I know that people have been complaining that their cellphones have been down, their internet has been down. That can be caused by surveillance weaponry targeting their devices. It could be because there are so many people using them. But my guess would be that they are using people’s devices, meaning law enforcement and private security, as geo-tracking devices. And people should be very aware that the full CIA/NSA-developed suite of tools that now have made it into the hands of local law enforcement in this country are most certainly trained on those activists and their supporters.

By a nearly unanimous vote, the American Psychological Association’s Council of Representatives has voted to adopt a new policy barring psychologists from participating in national security interrogations. The resolution puts the APA on the side of international law by barring psychologists from working at Guantánamo, CIA black sites and other settings deemed illegal under the Geneva Conventions or the U.N. Convention Against Torture, unless they’re working directly for detainees or independent third parties defending human rights.
